Any time is a good time to take care of yourself. This tea does just that. It has natural, essential ingredients to boost your immune system, soothe your pain and bring some well deserved calm to your day.
Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which has wonderful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It's not well absorbed into the body on it's own. But taken with black pepper, absorption is boosted, thanks to its bioactive compound, piperine. Click here for more information on the health effects of turmeric.
- 1 Tbsp freshly grated turmeric (or 1/2 tsp ground)
- 1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger (1/2 tsp ground, though fresh is best)
- 1 whole lemon (juiced, plus leftover rind)
- maple syrup or honey, to taste (optional )
- 1 pinch black pepper or cayenne (optional )
- 3 cups filtered water
In a small saucepan, add turmeric, ginger, lemon juice and lemon rind, maple syrup or honey (if using), cayenne (if using), and filtered water.
Bring to a simmer (not a boil) over medium to medium-high heat. Then turn off heat.
Set a small strainer over serving glasses and divide between two mugs. Enjoy. If the tonic is too potent for you, dilute with more hot/warm water.
Store (strained) leftovers in the refrigerator up to 2-3 days. Reheat on the stovetop until just warm.
